Why add cladding to shipping containers?

Shipping containers are incredibly versatile, with a well-done conversion suitable for everything from a free-standing workshop or greenhouse in your back garden, to somewhere to run a business, a place to teach, a horse’s stables, or even a cute little summer getaway!

One thing all of these structures have in common is that you may want to make them blend in with the surroundings, or simply have the steel structure look a little more like your typical wooden outbuilding. In those cases, there’s no better way to go about it than with treated wooden thermocladding.

At Philspace, we use a modified Scandinavian softwood called ThermoWood®, which is treated at high temperature in a kiln. As a result, ThermoWood® is considerably stronger than in the wood’s untreated form, making it ideal for outdoor use.

Why you should add thermal cladding to your containers

The benefits of adding container thermal cladding include:

  • Extreme robustness: ThermoWood® is 50% more stable than untreated softwood
  • Long-lasting: requires no extra treatment to maintain its integrity
  • High-resistance: you needn’t worry about decay and fungal attacks
  • A natural finish: ThermoWood® gives your steel shipping container that rustic outbuilding feel.

What about the colour?

Over time, ThermoWood® left exposed to the elements can gradually fade, ending up with either a charcoal or grey finish. To preserve its natural colour, we can treat ThermoWood® clad containers with a simple, clear formula that contains a UV filter. This prevents any colour change, and keeps your container looking fantastic in a rural or suburban setting all year round!

How do you put cladding on a shipping container?

If you’re considering doing a home container conversion yourself, you’ll be pleased to know you can add cladding to a container using your own materials. However, it’s not an easy process, and requires a lot of hard labour, plenty of wooden materials, and precise measurement.

The video below from Domino Clamps shows one way of going about cladding your own shipping container.
