Designing & Supplying a Lithium-ION Battery Charging Container

Our Sales Team here at Philspace were recently tasked by our client to design and supply a bespoke lithium-ion battery charging container, for use overseas in the defence sector.

As the global demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow, fuelled by the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy storage systems, and portable electronics, safe and efficient methods for transporting and charging these batteries have become critical.

One emerging solution is the use of modified shipping containers as mobile or stationary charging stations for lithium-ion batteries. These “containerised battery systems” offer scalability, mobility, and protection, but they come with unique safety challenges and regulatory considerations.

Shipping containers are appealing for battery storage and charging for several reasons:

Mobility: Containers can be easily transported by truck, rail, or sea, allowing for flexible deployment in remote or temporary locations.

Scalability: Containers can be modularly combined to increase capacity.

Protection: Steel containers provide structural integrity and can be customised for thermal control, fire suppression, and insulation.

Cost-efficiency: Using standardised containers reduces the cost of developing custom infrastructure.

Lithium-ion batteries pose fire and explosion risks, especially under high charge/discharge conditions or mechanical stress. When charging these batteries inside shipping containers, several precautions are essential.  Temperature control, fire suppression, ventilation, battery management systems, battery isolation and emergency shutoff systems are all critical in providing a unit that complies with regional and international standards.

As renewable energy and electric mobility grow, containerised battery solutions are expected to play a central role in both mobile and fixed energy infrastructure.
